Was Diana Secretly Preparing Harry for the Throne? A Royal Correspondent's Claim Reopens an Old Question

Prince William is the heir apparent, followed by his three children in the line of succession - that much is constitutional certainty. But a royal correspondent who knew Diana, Princess of Wales intimately has suggested something far more surprising: that the late princess privately entertained the idea that her younger son, Prince Harry, might one day become king instead.

The claim, floated by journalist Richard Kay on a royal podcast, has reignited fascination with Diana's complicated relationship with the crown - and with the two very different sons she raised.

What Kay Claims Diana Said

Kay, who maintained a close friendship with Diana before her death in 1997, said she once shared doubts about whether William actually wanted the responsibility of becoming king. According to Kay, she described William as a quiet, reserved young man and admitted she was unsure whether he desired what she called the "top job" of wearing the crown.

She also, reportedly, jokingly referred to her younger son as "Good King Harry," a nickname inspired by medieval history. Kay suggested the phrase may have been more than a joke - that Diana was keeping open, at least in her own mind, the possibility that Harry could one day succeed his father, who was then the Prince of Wales.

Despite the speculation, Kay acknowledged that events ultimately unfolded very differently, and said he believes William is well suited to his future role as monarch.

The Skeptical Counterpoint

When the claim was discussed on Good Morning Britain, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams urged caution. Diana may simply have been voicing a passing thought rather than making a serious prediction, he argued - and there is a hard biographical fact that limits the speculation entirely: Harry was only 12 years old when Diana died.

No one, Fitzwilliams noted, could know what kind of future role a child of that age might have grown into. He also pointed to the enormous demands of the monarchy, describing it as an extremely high-profile role requiring a particular temperament, and questioned whether Harry would have been suited to it - a point that has only grown more pointed given Harry's subsequent departure from royal duties.

A More Sympathetic Reading

Cultural commentator Ateh Jewel took a warmer view during the same discussion. She highlighted Harry's military service and praised his decision to prioritize his family's well-being when stepping back from royal life, suggesting that the qualities Diana loved in her younger son - his emotional openness, his instinct to protect - found expression in a life outside the institution rather than inside it.

Both commentators agreed on one thing: Diana and Harry were, and are, deeply emotional figures, and the trauma of losing his mother at such a young age left a permanent mark on the prince. Any conversation about Diana's hopes for Harry has to pass through that loss, which cut short whatever guidance she might have offered as he grew up.

Why the Idea Is Not as Wild as It Sounds

History shows that succession assumptions can shift. Britain's current royal line has been stable for decades, but past generations saw abdications, deaths, and crises reshuffle the order with stunning speed. A mother in the 1990s, watching an introverted elder son and a lively younger one, could reasonably imagine scenarios in which the burden landed differently. Diana, famously unconventional, may have been imagining futures the palace considered unthinkable.

There is also a psychological reading that resonates with royal biographers: Diana often said William was born to the job but worried the institution would crush his sensitivity, while Harry's free spirit reminded her of herself. "Good King Harry" may simply have captured a mother's wish that the son most like her would never be forced into the cage she knew so well.

What It Means Now

Today, the question is purely historical. William stands as heir with three children behind him, and Harry lives in California, having stepped back from royal duties and authored a memoir detailing his break with the institution. The monarchy's future looks orderly from the outside, whatever storms swirl within. For royal watchers, the claim also reframes old photographs and anecdotes in a new light. Diana's insistence on giving both boys ordinary experiences - tube rides, fast food, homeless shelters - was often described as her way of insulating William from the isolation she suffered inside the palace. Seen through Kay's recollection, those same choices read differently: a mother testing which of her sons could survive either world, the privileged one or the ordinary one, and perhaps hoping she could spare at least one of them from having to choose.

Yet the story endures because it captures something true about Diana that official biographies struggle to hold: she was a royal who loved her sons more than the crown, and who sometimes imagined - half in jest, half in defiance - that the institution's rules were not the only possible world. Whether she ever seriously believed Harry could be king matters less than what the thought reveals: that the most famous mother in Britain measured her children's futures not in thrones, but in happiness.
