Court Filings Expose Prince Harry's Warm 'Movie Snuggles' Texts to a Tabloid Journalist

A trove of previously undisclosed text messages between Prince Harry and a tabloid journalist has surfaced in one of the most closely watched privacy trials in recent British legal history, and the exchanges are nothing like what court observers expected. Warm, informal, and described in arguments as distinctly flirtatious, the messages have added an unexpected human dimension to an eleven-week High Court battle over phone hacking and unlawful information gathering.

The Case Behind the Revelations

The messages came to light during proceedings against Associated Newspapers Limited, the publisher behind the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. Prince Harry, now 41, joined a remarkable coalition of claimants including actress Elizabeth Hurley, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish, all alleging the publisher misused private information and relied on unlawful information-gathering techniques over many years.

Harry has been unambiguous about his grievance. In his written evidence he accused the publisher of "an endless pursuit, a campaign, an obsession with having every aspect of my life under surveillance so they could get the run on their competitors." The company has denied all allegations throughout, arguing its journalism was lawful, and the trial concluded at the end of March with judgment awaited.

The 'Flirty' Messages Entered Into Evidence

During closing arguments, lawyers introduced a series of messages sent between late 2011 and early 2012 between Harry and Charlotte Griffiths, a showbusiness journalist. According to the court record, the two met at a party, after which Harry added her on Facebook and shared his phone number. His opening text set the informal tone that followed:

"It's H, incase you were confused by the name and picture!!! X."

What came next raised eyebrows in the gallery. Messages showed Harry calling the journalist "sugar", referencing "movie snuggles", and signing off with "mwah" and strings of kisses. In one exchange he wrote:

"Just wish I could have been there ... especially now that you're there! Dou ever work?!!.... Hope you're really well Griff ... Miss our movie snuggles!! I'm off comms all week incase u think I'm being rude, keep me posted xxx xxx xxx."

The phrase "movie snuggles" in particular has been quoted, dissected and memed across British media since the filings became public, with columnists marveling at the gap between the prince's later public image and the breezy bachelor tone of these messages.

Supporters of the prince note that nothing in the messages was secret at the time; they were sent between two adults who both knew exactly who the other was. Critics, meanwhile, have questioned why the claimants produced them at all, with some legal observers suggesting the excerpts say more about the messy reality of press relations than about any unlawful act. Either way, the excerpts have given the public its closest look yet at how casually royals and reporters once mixed.

Friendly Banter or Something More?

Neither side disputes the messages were friendly; the dispute is about what they prove. Media commentators note that royal reporters cultivate sources with warmth by design, and a journalist's ability to text casually with a prince says as much about the symbiotic relationship between palaces and press as it does about either individual. Others see in the messages a young prince, then in his twenties, enjoying an unguarded friendship at a time when his circle of trusted people was famously small.

For the claimants, however, the point of producing the messages was different. The defense had suggested portions of leaked information about Harry's life could have come from friendly journalists rather than unlawful methods. The claimants argue that the very existence of such channels makes it harder, not easier, to establish where information truly originated, and that the publisher's alleged surveillance operation must be judged on its own evidence.

A Trial With Much Bigger Stakes

However entertaining the texts may be to headline writers, the outcome of the case carries serious consequences. Privacy law, press regulation and the price of celebrity reporting all hang on the judgment. Harry has described the litigation as the culmination of decades of grievance dating back to his mother's death, and he has previously settled separate claims against other newspaper groups for substantial sums.

The Duchess of Sussex has not been involved in the messaging revelations, and nothing in the filings suggests she was. The materials all predate the couple's relationship by several years.

What Happens Next

Judgment in the case is expected later this year, and whichever way it lands, appeals seem certain. For Prince Harry, the trial represents the culmination of a promise made long before California, Netflix deals and memoirs: that he would hold sections of the British press accountable in court rather than in interviews.

For now, the "movie snuggles" texts serve as a curious footnote, a reminder that the people at the center of these monumental legal battles are humans with inside jokes and friendships, and that the same press apparatus that fought Harry in court once traded kisses by text with him. The messages were read into the public court record; the publisher denies all wrongdoing and no findings have yet been made.
