She Found Decades-Old Love Letters in Her Garage - Now a West End Star Is Publishing Her Royal Romance

Every memoir has a moment where it stops being an idea and becomes inevitable. For West End star Ruthie Henshall, that moment arrived in the least glamorous place imaginable: her own garage, elbow-deep in boxes she had been avoiding for years. What she found inside was a time capsule, stacks of diaries and bundles of handwritten letters from a romance she had never publicly detailed, written by a man who would go on to become the Duke of Edinburgh.

The result is "The Showgirl and the Prince," a deeply personal memoir scheduled for release in July 2026, promising an intimate account of the relationship between the celebrated stage actress and Prince Edward that has, until now, survived mostly as royal trivia.

A Story Rediscovered in Cardboard Boxes

According to Henshall, the project began by accident. While clearing out the garage, she uncovered boxes filled with journals and personal correspondence spanning decades of her life. Among them were letters written by Prince Edward himself, dating from the years when the two were involved in a relationship that both kept firmly out of the public eye.

Sitting on the floor of her garage, reading her own younger handwriting and his, she reportedly realized how formative and meaningful that period had been. What might have remained a private nostalgia trip hardened into a decision: the story deserved to be told properly, in her own words, before the details faded entirely.

When the Theatre World and the Palace Collided

The romance began in 1988, at a moment when both were building careers in the entertainment industry. Henshall was a young performer finding her footing in London's theatre scene, appearing in the production of Cats that was then one of the biggest shows in the world. Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II, was working in theatrical production himself, a brief but genuine attempt at a career behind the camera and the stage.

That shared professional world brought them together away from palace walls. What began as a connection between two people who understood the pressures of performance grew quickly into something deeper, spanning quiet dinners, industry events, and eventually invitations into royal spaces that outsiders almost never see.

Life Behind Palace Doors

The most anticipated sections of the book will surely be her accounts of visiting Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle as a guest rather than a subject. Henshall has described being welcomed into settings that felt simultaneously extraordinary and surprisingly domestic, a contradiction that few memoirists are positioned to describe from the inside.

Crucially, she has consistently pushed back against any suggestion that the relationship was a fling or a brush with celebrity. In her telling, it was a genuine, emotionally significant romance between two young people, conducted under the strange dual pressures of stage schedules and palace security. That framing alone distinguishes her account from the tabloid treatments that have circulated for decades.

An Ending Without Bitterness

The relationship ended in 1993, after roughly five years, and by all accounts it ended without acrimony. Henshall chose to pour her energy into her flourishing stage career, a decision that paid off spectacularly: starring roles in Chicago and Les Miserables followed, cementing her status as one of Britain's leading musical theatre performers.

Prince Edward, meanwhile, married Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999, and the couple's marriage has endured as one of the steadiest in the modern royal family. The lack of scandal or grievance in Henshall's recollections suggests a memoir shaped by affection and reflection rather than revenge, which may be exactly why the Palace is expected to stay silent about it.

Why This Book Lands Differently

Royal-adjacent memoirs arrive with regularity, but this one occupies unusual territory. Henshall is not a former staffer with a grievance, a journalist with secondhand sources, or a figure monetizing proximity to scandal. She is an acclaimed artist describing a formative chapter of her own life, supported by primary documents, her diaries and his letters, that were written in real time by two people who did not know how history would remember them.

The timing also gives the book extra resonance. The royal family is passing through one of its most turbulent stretches in modern memory, with the fallout from the Andrew scandal reshaping public attitudes toward the institution. A warm, human story of a romance that simply ran its course offers a striking counterpoint: proof that the monarchy's orbit has also contained ordinary love, mutual respect, and endings without enemies.

When "The Showgirl and the Prince" arrives next summer, it will be read on two levels at once, as a piece of theatre memoir and as a keyhole into a palace that rarely lets the curtain fall. Either way, the woman who found those letters in her garage has already secured the ending every memoirist wants: the last word belongs to her.
