Palace Insiders Reportedly Say It Is Time to Turn the Page - and William Could Be King Within a Year

Could the British monarchy be preparing for a handover sooner than anyone expected? Reports attributed to palace insiders suggest preparations may already be underway for King Charles to eventually pass the crown to Prince William, with some commentators speculating the transition could unfold within the next six to twelve months. The claims arrive amid intensifying pressure over the Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor scandal, which has dragged the King and the wider royal family into yet another cycle of damaging headlines.

Where the Speculation Began

The most detailed version of the story comes from royal commentator Rob Shuter, who discussed the possibility of abdication during an appearance on the podcast The Nerve with Maureen Callahan. Shuter, a former publicist for Princess Michael of Kent, has long claimed continuing contacts inside royal circles - and he insists those contacts have been responding to his own reporting.

"My sources in the palace are strong - I was the publicist for Princess Michael of Kent. I have worked for the Royal Family. I got a cheque from them, I got a monthly retainer from them," he said, establishing his credentials before delivering the claim that has circulated ever since: that his recent column arguing the King should step aside was read - and quietly welcomed - inside the palace walls.

The Quote Fueling the Fire

According to Shuter, the feedback he received was remarkable in its directness. "I am told within the palace, 'Your bombshell piece saying Charles should abdicate was read within the palace, and a lot of people agree with you. It's time to turn the page.'" The phrase "time to turn the page" has since become shorthand among royal watchers for the belief that the institution is ready for William.

Shuter went further, arguing that the transition may be closer to formality than rumor. "He's already the King. He's the acting King in all but name," he said of William, pointing to the Prince of Wales's expanded diplomatic role, his growing influence over royal staffing and strategy, and Charles's ongoing health treatments - factors that have already shifted day-to-day leadership toward the heir.

Why the Andrew Scandal Changes the Calculus

The timing is not accidental. Every new development in the Andrew affair - the arrest, the searches, the document releases - lands not only on the disgraced duke but on the monarchy that sheltered him for decades. Critics ask why the institution acted so slowly, and each answer implicates the top. For palace strategists, an acceleration of the succession offers a clean narrative: a new reign, a slimmer family, and a decisive break from the Andrews-era entanglements.

William, meanwhile, has built his reputation as the modernizer - someone openly committed to a smaller, more accountable royal family. A transfer of the crown under those circumstances would allow the monarchy to rebrand itself as the solution to the crisis rather than its host.

The Wild Card: A House for Harry

Shuter also floated a claim that startled even seasoned observers: that King Charles may be considering offering Royal Lodge - the Windsor mansion vacated by Andrew - to Prince Harry. The gesture, according to his sources, could serve as an olive branch to the estranged younger son, and would symbolically repurpose the property most associated with the family's troubles.

Perhaps most strikingly, Shuter suggested William might not oppose the move, despite the well-documented rift between the brothers. Whether that reflects genuine reconciliation or simple political realism - a settled Harry is a quieter Harry - remains anyone's guess. Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on any of the claims, which should caution readers: none of this constitutes an official plan.

How Abdication Would Actually Work

Legally, the path is straightforward. Charles could follow the precedent set by his uncle Edward VIII in 1936 and voluntarily relinquish the throne, or - more likely, given his sense of duty - gradually delegate functions while remaining king in name, effectively making William regent-in-practice. Parliament would formalize any full abdication through declaration, and the Accession Council would proclaim William king. The coronation, whenever it comes, would be the ceremony rather than the moment of transfer.

Precedent exists elsewhere too: several European monarchies have executed smooth, planned handovers in recent years, including Spain and the Netherlands, where aging monarchs stepped aside for younger generations precisely to reset public goodwill.

What to Believe, and What to Watch

Healthy skepticism is warranted. "Palace insiders" is a famously elastic category, and Shuter's track record is a mix of hits and misses. But the underlying dynamics are real: Charles is undergoing treatment for cancer, William is increasingly the public face of the monarchy, and the Andrew scandal has created institutional appetite for a fresh start. Whether the page turns in six months, two years, or at the end of Charles's natural reign, the direction of travel is unmistakable - and for the first time in modern memory, a significant number of people inside the system appear to want the handover sooner rather than later.
