From Rugby Hero to Stripped of His MBE: Stuart Hogg and the Honours King Charles Took Back This Month

UK honours revocation news graphic

King Charles III has removed MBEs and OBEs from nine individuals this month, following offenses that ranged from criminal convictions to conduct that damaged the reputation of the UK's honours system. Among them is one of Scotland's most famous athletes - a reminder that in Britain, even sporting glory does not shield a recipient from the consequences of their behavior.

The honours in question are among the nation's most prestigious awards, presented by the monarch to recognize outstanding achievement or long-term service to the country or local communities. The OBE, or Officer of the Order of the British Empire, typically honors significant contributions at a regional or national level, while the MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, recognizes dedication and lasting impact at the community level. Because of that significance, revocation is rare - and reserved for serious causes.

The Fall of Stuart Hogg

The highest-profile case this month belongs to former Scottish rugby captain Stuart Hogg. According to the UK's official public record, The Gazette, Hogg's MBE was revoked after he pleaded guilty to domestic abuse charges involving his estranged wife, Gillian.

Hogg had received the honour in the 2024 New Year Honours list for his contributions to rugby, where he was regarded as one of the most talented fullbacks of his generation. But in January 2025, after admitting the charge, he was sentenced to a one-year community payback order - and the honour has now been formally withdrawn.

The official notice in The Gazette was stark and unambiguous: "The King has directed that the appointment of Stuart William Hogg to be a Member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated 30 December 2023 shall be cancelled and annulled."

Hogg previously played as a fullback for the Glasgow Warriors, earned dozens of international caps for Scotland, took part in three British and Irish Lions tours, and had been playing for Montpellier in France. None of it mattered once the conviction was entered; the forfeiture process, once triggered by a guilty plea, moved inexorably forward.

Why a Guilty Plea Was Decisive

The honours system's forfeiture criteria are clear: recipients found guilty of a criminal offense and sentenced to imprisonment of more than three months face automatic review, and censure or striking off by a professional body can also trigger removal. In cases involving violence, regulators apply a broader standard - conduct that brings the honours system into disrepute - and a domestic abuse conviction by a celebrated honouree meets that test squarely.

Once the Honours Forfeiture Committee reviews a case and recommends annulment, the monarch formally directs the cancellation, and the decision is published in The Gazette. The recipient must return the insignia and cease using the letters after their name.

An Animal Welfare Case Also Makes the List

Hogg was not alone. The same round of annulments included a case connected to animal welfare offenses, where conduct that had once earned public recognition was judged incompatible with the honour's continued holding. The breadth of this month's list - from domestic abuse to other serious misconduct - illustrates how the committee weighs each case on its own facts while applying one consistent principle: the honour must not become an embarrassment to the system that granted it.

The machinery behind such decisions is worth understanding. Cases reach the Honours Forfeiture Committee through referrals triggered by court outcomes, regulatory rulings, or public reporting, and the committee reviews the evidence against the published forfeiture criteria before recommending action to the monarch. Recipients are given the chance to make representations, and the final annulment is recorded in The Gazette so that the withdrawal is as public as the original award. Nothing about the process is swift or theatrical, which is precisely why its conclusions carry such weight.

The Broader Message to Every Honouree

Each annulment is published, public, and permanent. For the nine individuals concerned, the loss is reputational and deeply personal - a state-level withdrawal of recognition that cannot be appealed in any conventional sense, though recipients may make representations during the committee's review.

For the tens of thousands of honour holders who continue serving their communities honorably, the system works as designed. Recognition remains meaningful precisely because it can be lost.

What Happens to Hogg's Legacy Now

On the pitch, Hogg's playing record cannot be rewritten - the tries, the captaincies, the Lions tours remain part of rugby history. But the state's formal recognition of that career has been erased by his own admitted conduct, and the contrast between the two records is now the defining feature of his public story.

The takeaway: an MBE honors a person, not just a performance. This month's nine annulments - Hogg's among them - send the same message to every current and future recipient: the Crown's recognition survives only as long as the behavior behind it deserves.
